Test Your Building Skills against the Clock

Make 'N' Break has a simple concept and easy-to-follow rules, making it easy to pick up and play right out of the box. First, roll the dice to see how much time to put on the timer, draw a game card, and arrange ten multicolored blocks to match the design on the card. Complete the designs on as many cards as you can until the timer runs out, then collect the number of tokens you've earned from your cards--three for difficult designs, two for moderate designs, and one for easy designs. After four rounds, the builder with the most tokens wins.

Awarded Parent's Choice Silver Honor.

A Family Game That's Fun for Kids and Adults Alike

Because the game cards feature variable difficulty levels, Make 'N' Break can be enjoyed by everyone from children to adults. Although young children will probably be unable to arrange the blocks quickly to the timer, just practicing the arrangements on the cards will help reinforce their logical and spatial reasoning. These fundamental skills are not necessarily ones that adults are guaranteed to excel at above their children, making this an exciting family game where the kids and the adults can compete head to head.

Excellent Replay Value

For more experienced players, Make 'N' Break becomes a race against time and requires dexterous fingers and quick reactions. Luck also becomes a factor, with the dice roll determining how much time you receive on the timer to complete your arrangements. Our testers found the replay value of this game to be great--chances are you won't tire of the game after multiple plays, but will continue to get better at it, resulting in fiercer competitions. There is also an alternate set of rules for "expert builders," making the game even more intense.

What's in the Box

One timer, 10 building blocks, 80 building cards, 60 counters, and one dice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really fun family game, September 5, 2007

This game is great fun for the whole family. The age range recommends 8+, but my 4 year-old son plays fine. Unlike many other "family" games, this one is actually fun for the parents. And we play with our big people friends when the kids are in bed, and it is a blast. This game makes me want to throw away Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, and all those other tortuous games the kids have.

My son asked for this for Christmas. He plays it in his third grade math class. There are three levels of difficulty so our 5 year-old can play at level 1 and there are plenty of challenges in levels 2 and 3. I was surprised at how much fun we were all having. You are timed at how many block structures you can build according to the cards in a certain amount of time. Sometimes you have to follow the pattern exactly - design and color of blocks; other times you follow the pattern but can use any blocks reagrdless of color. It's best to play on a hard surface on the floor because blocks can go flying off the table when you need them!

This game is a hit with my three boys 10, 8, and 6. I had been looking for games we could play as a family that wouldn't be too boring for the older one, or too frustrating for the youngest one- and this one fit the bill. Essentially you look at a card with a picture of blocks and then try to recreate the picture with your blocks in the allotted time. It can be played quickly and requires no reading at all. The boys think it is great fun, but I wish there were some more challenging cards, or maybe even a more advanced set of cards to use for the grown-ups.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wait, we paid this much for WHAT exactly?, October 1, 2012

Ok, so our little girl had some money from her birthday. "Well," I thought to myself, "let's take this money down to the Lego store at the local mall and let her pick out something she'll like!" The fact that I (a grown man in his 30s) happen to have a somewhat unhealthy propensity for spending too much money on Legos for myself had nothing to do with this decision. Honest.

Anyway, so we get there and I tell her that we'll have a look at everything and at the end she can pick whatever she wants, up to and including a total price of $25 (how much money she had). She sees this Lego Friends advent calendar halfway through and is looking at it when one of the store employees stops by and says something like "Oh hey, yeah you should get one of those if you like it, cuz we're only getting a very limited shipment and once they're gone they're gone." Meanwhile our little Lego-obsessionist-in-training is going crazy over how awesome the pictures are. I ask the employee what's... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Daughter will love it, but I'm disappointed, September 29, 2012
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars

My daughter loves Lego Friends, so I know she will really enjoy this calendar. I was able to buy it for $35 at a local educational toy store.

This is the first time I have bought a Lego advent calendar. Last year I bought two Playmobil calendars.

Firstly, I dislike that the box does not show you exactly what you get inside (like the Playmobil boxes do.) Even worse than this, they show pieces from other sets - like a horse and cart on the back of the box. I just know my daughter will be so excited when she sees the picture of the horse (she loves horses) but then I'll get to tell her that there is no horse inside.

I found a photo online of what you do get inside the box and I don't think it is worth it for the price. I suppose you are paying for the 'daily experience'. I think the Playmobil calendars are a much better value - they cost less and you get more people, animals and accessories included. My daughter still plays with the stable set up from the... 4.0 out of 5 stars Inflated Amazon Pricing, October 22, 2012
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: LEGO Friends Advent Calendar 3316 (Toy)
Those familiar with Lego Advent Calendars are aware that they are NOT a great value. The price you pay is more for the advent experience than the Lego bricks. You don't get very many pieces. However, it's a fun experience, and many of the pieces are unique, so we think it's worth the splurge. We picked the Lego Friends advent calendar for our daughter this year. We look at the calendars available and try to pick one with the strongest holiday theme.

Although the box doesn't show all the items that come in the calendar, the previous calendars we've seen didn't show pieces that WEREN'T included. Cartoon items are not included; pictures of actual Lego pieces were. The horse and cart on the back of the Lego Friends Advent Calendar box are actual Lego pieces but are not included. Like other reviewers, I find this a bit deceitful.

If you go to the Lego website you can see a picture of every piece/daily gift that comes in this calendar. And if you decide to buy... Read more
